Foreign players in England.

I was looking at the players signed in the January transfer window earlier and again it seems as though managers, particularly in the Premiership have opted to go for a foreign player instead of buying an English player or developing the youth talent. And you may say “what youth talent?” but there are lots of quality English players being released who are just as good as the over played foreign mercenaries who don’t care about the shirt.

Basically this thread is about ‘are foreign players hampering England’s chances of success on a world stage?’ To be honest I don’t think at the moment they are as much as they will in a few years when it isn’t uncommon for teams to field a total none English line up. Soon the best English players will be playing at the bottom of the Premiership or in the Championship which isn’t the way forward for England as a nation. I think the way to get around it is slowly introducing foreign player limits to match squads, of course it would be unfair on the likes of Arsenal and Bolton if suddenly you could only play with 9 foreigners but eventually I think it should end up going that way. Don’t get me wrong, players like Zola and Henry have been great for English football and it’s nice to have the best players in the world playing in our country. But I think it’s gone to far now when you have clubs like Portsmouth spending on useless foreign players when they should be developing decent youth players.

Portsmouth have about 3 English Players in there entire first-team squad, and look where they are...

Suppose Arsenal invested in Walcott, but I think it will take him years to make it in the Premiership.

And Febregas and the rest of the Arsenal team are far too powderpuff, need some prescence in midfield.

I agree with your idea Josh about imposing a limit on the number of foreign players in the squad.

They do similar things across Europe, notably in Italy, where there is a rule that you can only sign a certain number of foreign players each season.

In Portugal, you have to have a certain amount of homegrown talent from your own clubs youth system, and a certain number of Portuguese in your squad for the season.

Both are good policies, and I'd like to see them implemented over here at some stage in the near future. It would certainly decrease Chelsea's dominance, and would force teams to concentrate more on youth policies.
