Quote:
Manchester City's Joey Barton has insisted he is not being greedy after turning down the club's £28,000-a-week offer and asking for a transfer.
Barton, 23, claims there is no chance of him staying at Eastlands unless he becomes one of the Blues' top earners.

"I'm disappointed at what has gone on. It could have been handled a lot better but we've got to get on with it.

"Obviously it was made out I was very, very greedy and asking for an extortionate amount of money."

City's offer to Barton would have doubled his current salary.

And it is understood by BBC Radio Five Live that it would make him one of the top three earners at the club.

But Barton maintains that is not the case.

He added: "I asked to be put in line with the top earners and I wasn't offered that. I value myself higher than the club does.

"It may have been a bit impetuous of me to hand in a transfer request but I felt the offer was not good enough," added Barton.

Interesting situation at Man City at the moment. Barton had been one of if not Man City's best player this season and said he was keen to stay then out of the blue he handed in a transfer request. From what I gather he rates himself as one of the key members of the squad and wants to be amongst the top earners. To be honest I think that's fair enough really, he's had hard times but he's worked hard and pulled through it and has been in great form this season. So why don't Man City see this and offer him a contract similar to Man City's other top players?

He's starting tonight and I hope he plays well, I think he will stay in the Summer when he gets offered the contract he wants and has earnt really.

Agree again Josh.

Barton has been brilliant this season, and should go to Germany with England in the Summer. I rate him as one of the best midfielders in the Premiership, and I can understand why he wants to leave, because he's certainly good enough to play for a top club.

However, the timing of his announcement might have been better-thought out, maybe if he'd said next Summer that he wants to move to a bigger club, people would understand more. I don't think he's done himself any favours now, as I'm sure a lot of the Manchester City fans will get on his back about it .

I know you follow Middesboro a bit Tom, they showed a bit of interest. Is Barton the kind of player they need? Also I think he could do quite well at Manchester Untied and Arsenal. They have both lost their big midfield players (Keane and Vieira) perhaps Barton could be a replacement? I think he should be going to Germany too Tom, perhaps not to start but he would always show 100% if we needed him.

Middlesbrough need another midfielder, so he would be good for them I think, although Boateng is probably the more experienced, but I certainly wouldn't rule out Barton going there in the Summer. However, Middlesbrough will concentrate on defence more I feel, because that has been shocking this year.

Barton won't go to Manchester United, because I'm pretty sure that Gattuso will be going there at the end of the season. Although Barton is the same kind of player as Gattuso, so who knows...if they can get him for a bit cheaper?

Do you not think that with Scholes getting older and all their other centre midfielders being not up to standard that Barton and Guttuso could play together? God that would be a crunching combination, able to match Lampard and Essien I think.

Gattuso would kill both Lampard and Essien in one go. And I sincerely hope he does, because I can't stand either of them. Maybe all the little English puffs won't like playing their fairy football once Gattuso comes to the Premiership.

If Gattuso is like this, then why are Milan letting him leave?

Because he's not up to the technical standard of the Italian game. He's a ball winner, but his shooting, and technical skills are not good enough to play in an attacking Milan team as it is these days.

Plus, he wants to leave himself, as he said he wants a new challenge, preferably in England with Manchester United.

Seems the kind of player Manchester United need at the moment. Barton would be great along side him because he can attack and defend, I think I saw on Sky Sports news that he makes the most tackles per game in the Premiership and is high up there in shots per game.

If he were to move to Arsenal I think he would be perfect for them as well, he has a physical presense that they have been lacking but is also good enough technically to play for them.

I don't believe Barton wants to leave Man U, he's got a new agent recently who just wants a bit of comission for setting up a deal.

You get divers everywhere, Seria A, the Premiership and even the conference! To generalize like that is a bit unfair, Italian football has some of the best players in the world, even though it's a lot more defensive minded than the English game there is no denying that.

Italian Football is in some aspects, better than the Premiership, but your gonna get diving in any league. From Schoolboy to International someone is always gonna cheat to get an advantage, I bet everyone who has played Football has not dived as such, but cheated to get a foul etc...

btw, how do you know about all the Italian players sexuality? Wink

Just found this.

Quote:
City boss Stuart Pearce immediately rejected the bid from Middlesbrough, who had offered £4.5m for Barton two weeks ago.

4.5m seems quite cheap for a player of his age when SWP went for millions. [/quote]

Chelsea just went OTT to get SWP, they just wanted to make sure that Man United or Liverpool didn't get in with an offer and get him.

Where's the creativity in the midfield when gattuso and barton play together?

Both good players, but wouldn't work together IMO.

True, there wouldn't be any creativity, but who's suggesting that that they're playing together?

I think Barton is pretty creative. Not see that goal he got the other day? Shows he can attack, I think he's quite similar to Gerrard. Him and Gattuso would work.
