I've heard a whisper they're about to reform - anyone confirm?
Well overdue I reckon.

Now that would be good though can't see it happening plus Rick Witter and the Dukes have 4 gig dates in August.

A whisper heard over here as well, but like said above, cant see it happening as The Dukes still have tour dates. All the lads might have just played together and someones put 2 and 2 together and the rumours have started.

There have been a lot of whispers, I've even heard that Clinto Boon (of Inspirals fame) may be involved in some form! I doubt it would be this summer as the Dukes' album goes on conventional sale (rather than just off the web) in August and as Monsieur Higgins says, they are booked for four concerts to co-incide with this.
However, Rick's comments have changed to "one day but not now as I want to concentrate on the Dukes/the time has to be right" to "it could happen at any time" etc.. apparently he hinted very strongly at it on a radio interview in Manchester. He must get frustrated as the Dukes can't seem to organise a proper tour and the promotion of the gigs and the album have been poor. If you don't look in the right places online, you wouldn't even know that the Dukes existed!
My money is on a late autumn re-union and a winter tour, possibly just prior to Xmas. Question is though, would it be Joe or Paul Banks on guitar? If promoted properly I think a re-union could be very popular indeed!

Rob Wilson has continued playing with The Mothers, so it wasn't an exclusive deal.

Reforming so soon would surely be admitting failure? I liked the Sheds but to me, getting back together would be an money driven embarrasment rather than a euphoric comeback (not to mention a kick in the teeth to the rest of The Dukes). Especially if Clint Goon got involved. The Inspirals were utter dogrot.

I've met him in Roses bar and he seems a sound bloke but Inspirals' music just never got on with me tbh. Probably cos there are so many other similar bands that are just better I suppose.

Clint Boon = top bloke. Any man who asks the bar staff and glass collectors at the venue he is DJing at for their requests before playing anything the customers asks for is a legend. |

'This Is How It Feels' stands up against anything produced at that time or subsequently IMO, a brilliant song. Saturn 5, Joe, She Comes In The Fall etc are all excellent tracks too!
I heard Clint Boon may be temporarily drafted onto keys if Fraser couldn't be tempted to return (he is now a producer) - Clint and the Sheds are very close, Rick sang 'Chasing Rainbows' at Clint Boon's wedding (Peter Hook was best man - Greg's invite was lost in the post) and it could be mutually beneficial.
The Inspirals are a good paradigm, like Clint Boon, Rick has tried to go solo and makes a few quid DJing etc but the Inspirals have re-formed and toured. To be honest, The Sheds broke up prematurely, their last single was Top 20 and they had a good album as illustrated by 'One Hand Clapping (the previously unreleased demos) and they still have a strong support base.
Their problem was the hiatus between the release of 'Disco Down' and 'The Truth Be Told' caused by Paul Banks' departure and the poor promotion the band received after that. Shed Seven are very popular in the north, Newcastle especially.
Anything done in the right way could be big, The Dukes have some good songs so Rick still 'has it' and Tom Gladwin's project, people:in airports are good too. If the rest of the band can fill in Rick's musical blanks they'll be back in the zone. Shirley it's better than trudging through the toilet circuit with a new band.
If it's just for a few gigs then great but hopefully some record companies will be stirred into action, I'm still shocked that The Dukes had to finance their new album themselves.
Let's watch this space and see what occurs!

Not sure that's entirely the case at the indie bars and clubs i've been going to for the last 2 years. Not heard Shed Seven played once by any of the DJ's. Every one of the pretentious c*nts just looks at you as if you are some sort of leper for asking them to play a bit of Shed Seven then they just try and laugh it off
However, no doubt if they played a gig up there it would sell out though, just annoying how no f*cker will play their stuff, when they are quite happy to play s***e like razorlight etc at the indie clubs in town

I think that's the problem everywhere with DJs, same down here. I was speaking more from a fanbase point of view, they often played gigs up here and played both Unis countless times, Newcastle Mayfair (now 'The Gate') and what was Foundation/Riverside. They were very popular affairs. I seem to recall them doing signings at Virgin too and they managed to attract quite a crowd, even though arguably the wheels had begun to fall off and Polydor wanted rid of them! Rick dj'd a few times at various Clubs, including Stone Love before I left for the sunny Midlands post the Sheds break up. (The two events were unconnected )

It ain't just the Sheds either.Music is gash now. Anyone know a good night anywhere where DJs play stuff like Chameleons, Bunnymen,La's, MBV? Everywhere I go I seem to walk into an NME magazine. Been to Tokyo in Hudds tonight, granted they closed with Oasis 'Whatever' but no f***ing Roses or out decent most of the night.
THE HEROES would be a rite song to finish a night out with.

I interviewed Clint Boon for my Uni paper when he was doing the Clint Boon Experience- right nice fella. First thing he said was 'it's not every day you get to interview a legend is it?' We both started p1ssing ourselves and then nattered on for 1/2 an hour, which was nice. Much as he does a jolly good dj set, I loved the CBX and would love to see them back in some form or another

The best DJ set around my neck of the woods is at Barrons Club in Newcastle. Open from 2am-9am every Fri and Sat

I don't usually agree with you musically but Christ I do here.
I went to the Cockpit following a British Sea Power gig and I heard "Trash" by Suede for the very first time. It was the start of a very beautiful relationship.
I've been meaning to go back and do it again sometime, seeing as everytime I go out here in Manchester I end up glassing a doorman in the face.

That small room is f***ing ace. I went on the Friday before my 21st and just stayed there all night listening to Chameleons, B-52s and Trail of Dead. Went into other room for a piss and Beetlebum (by another of my favourite, really obscure bands, Blur) were on. I was on a roll so stolled into the biggie...what did I hear??
The f***ing Gossip.
Goodnight.

Everybody knows Brighton Beach is the best night. The one in Newcastle even comes with comedy Paul Weller and Liam Gallagher look-a-likes. It seems Paul Weller is one of Greg's constituents....

Which begs the question, which is the best 'tribute' act you've ever seen?
Mine: The Counterfeit Stones. Absolutely note perfect, and a truly funny night out as well - full of injokes for anyone who knows the Stones back catalogue or a bit about them, and lots of decent one liners.
They tour a lot - go see!! |
