City progressed to the first round of the FA Cup with a comprehensive thrashing of a battling but ultimately average Gainsborough team. Their Lincolnshire opponents had spells when they could have threatened, but the excellent defence of James Dudgeon and David McGurk kept them at bay. City, on the other hand, were keen to take their chances, and following their victory can look forward to a rematch with Conference leaders Grays Athletic, the side the Reds were cheated out of a deserved victory against by an incompetent official back in August.

On a fine playing surface the Minstermen looked fairly comfortable against their Conference North opponents in the early stages and threatened with their first real attack. After a spell of neat passing, Clayton Donaldson found himself with two men to beat on the left hand side of the penalty area. However, home defender Parker clumsily slid in, tripping the former Hull striker as he prepared to put a cross in. The referee, unfazed by home allegations that Donaldson had dived, pointed to the penalty spot. City striker Andy Bishop scored the spotkick, putting the ball comfortably wide of the keeper for 1-0.

The game then went rather scrappy, as Gainsborough tried to get more into it. However, former Chesterfield and Carlisle striker Reeves wasn't getting into the game and Nigerian striker Undenkwor was anonymous, as McGurk and Dudgeon dealt well with the home side's attacks. But finally, as the half wore on, the home side began to create a couple of half chances before the game's deciding moment. Trinity midfielder Charlie Trout was put clean through on goal, confidently drew porter, before putting the ball inches wide of the far post. If that had gone the other side of the post, City could have faced a tough afternoon and may well have had a fight on to stay in the FA Cup.

As it was, the Minstermen gave the scoreline a more comprehensive look about it before the travelling Red Army of 962 went for their half time pint. Barely seconds before the interval, full back Nathan Peat, restored to the side, put in a great cross from the left which resulted in an easy header at the back post for Bishop. Gainsborough players and fans again protested that the ball had crossed the touchline before the cross was put in, but the referee stood by the linesman's decision and the goal was allowed to continue to stand. Maybe this typifies City's change in luck, as just last season City were on the wrong end of a decision exactly the same at Accrington.

The second half was far more comfortable for City, with Gainsborough having long periods when they simply couldn't get hold of the ball. So it wasn't really much of a surprise when Clayton Donaldson was again superbly put through by Convery. The pacy frontman skillfully dribbled the ball past home keeper Holmshaw and finished from a difficult angle. 3-0 on 62 minutes and that was that.

City had chance after chance to add to the scoreline. Bishop could have had a hattrick after a push on O'Neill resulted in a free kick 25 yards out, but the ball hit the wall and was deflected just wide. But, in the end, only one more goal was added - Mark Convery thumping the ball home from close range three minutes from time.

Match Ratings

porter 7 - Not really tested by a poor Gainsborough attack.

price 7 - Dealt confidently with his defensive duties and showed improved distribution.

peat 7 1/2 - Great cross for the second goal and coped well at the back for the Reds.

dudgeon 7 - Won most things in the air.

mcgurk 7 - The usual solid, assured display.

convery 8 - Got forward well, great goal and lovely throughball for the third goal.

yalcin 7 1/2 - Didn't give the ball away much and looked confident in central midfield.

dunning 7 1/2 - Tackled the opposition midfielders well and didn't let them get into the game.

bishop 8 - Workrate was better this week. Cool under pressure for the penalty and deserved his second goal.

o'neill 7 - Far more involved this time out, linked up midfield and attack well.

donaldson 8 1/2 - Man Of The Match - The Conference North opponents just couldn't cope with his pace and trickery. Another great goal and a constant threat all game.

Referee - 7 1/2 - Gainsborough fans may have felt he made two poor decisions for the opening goals but at the time they seemed good and correct decisions from my view. Otherwise the official was barely noticed - just the sort of referee you need at any level of football. However, the well - built linesman on the side of the City fans in the second half received some deserved abuse for some poor decisions.

Overall Verdict

City eventually showed their higher status in the footballing pyramid against a competitive side. In the first half, a 2-0 scoreline perhaps was a little flattering, as Gainsborough will probably think they should have got the game to 1-1. However, in the second half, City's football was of very good quality and they should have scored far more than four goals. The real positives out of the game were the form of Donaldson, who is the best striker in the Conference that I have seen so far, and Bishop, who after a lethargic game against Canvey was back at his best. O'Neill was also far more effective and Convery produced a superb display in midfield. City will need to keep this form up against an Accrington Stanley team that has an excellent home record.
