To help speed up loading times for people using dial-up connections, and to ensure avatars don't take up too much space on screen, off site linking of avatars will end soon.

There are now 2 ways to get avatars:-

* There is a new avatar gallery available, you can select any avatar from that gallery. (any submissions for the gallery gratefully received! Please contact me if you have a submission).

* or you can upload your own avatar to our webspace (subject to the size limitations). If you are having difficulty uploading your own avatar because it is too large and you need it resizing then contact me by PM or email.

Don't worry guys, all your avatars will be stored in a holdings company for safe keeping and will be separated from the forum. Nothing to be worried about.

Quite the opposite, we are hosting them on the forum not seperating them.

By doing so we are increasing our bandwidth usage but this is only fair as otherwise to link to off site avatars is "bandwidth stealing" off other sites.

I would like to emphasise that I will gladly help anyone, who wishes their avatars to be resized and uploaded into our gallery, just send me a PM and link to the avatar you want or send me an email with the avatar as an attachment (whichever is easier for you). It's no trouble at all.

Also, as someone has asked me, if you are not sure where to change your avatar, change it in your Profile.

Is there any chance you can make an enlarged version available for T-shirt printing as i'd love one And i'm sure others will too. Cheers

Anyone else need any help with uploading their avatar? If so get in touch.

All off-site avatars will cease to show up very shortly.

If you have an avatar that is too large you will need to resize it (this can be done using any image editing program) then save it to your PC and then you can use the upload option, then press Submit.

The maximum size is 150x170 pixels and no greater than 7KB.

If you can't resize the image then PM me and I can resize the image for you.

It worked Smile

Avatars uploaded by users don't appear in the avatar gallery. I can upload avatars to the gallery though and if anyone has any contributions or requests for the gallery then please let me know.

Last call for anyone who needs help with their avatar before we make the change.

I am happy to resize anyone's avatar and I can reduce the size of animated GIFs as well.

Will we be able to upload Avatars as and when we decide to change? If so I can't see the difference between uploading and off site linking.

Yes of course.

And you're right there is very little difference. The only difference really is that we pay for the bandwidth use rather than the other sites (which is only right, to be fair as off site linking like that is 'bandwidth stealing').

But it does also ensure that images are of a smaller size, which is good for people who don't have very fast internet connections as pages will then load a lot quicker.

If you need to resize the image you want to use for your avatar, then follow these simple steps:

1. load up your image editing software (such as MS Photo Editor which is bundled free with MS Office so most PCs have that).

2. Then open up the image (by using File > Open for a file on your PC or using Copy and Paste for an image on the internet)

3. Then select Image > Resize (as shown below)

Resize it (in this example 145 pixels wide and 110 pixels high) as shown below, then press OK

4. Now save the image. Remember where you saved it!

That's it, the image is resized, you just need to specify that image as your avatar now.

To do that, edit your profile, scroll down to the Avatar Control Panel, from there you have the option to upload the image (Browse to the the location where you saved the image in step 4). Press Submit to save the changes.
